Ruthy MacNeil was taken in by a family in her community after her parents died.  It was considered by all to be an act of kindness.  What no one else knew was that her new family treated her like a slave.  From sunrise to sunset they worked her to the bone while they sat around giving orders.  When their westward-bound wagons came upon a fast-moving river Pa Reinhardt decided they couldn’t wait for the weather to settle down.  They had to cross right away.  The raging river overtook their wagons casting everyone downstream.  Ruthy was the only survivor.
